The CFA Program is a three-level professional credential from CFA Institute. It focuses on investment analysis, ethics, valuation, portfolio management and wealth planning.
For Level I, candidates may qualify through a completed bachelor’s degree, an undergraduate route in which the selected exam window is within 23 months of graduation, or a combination of 4,000 hours of work experience and higher education completed over at least three sequential years. CFA Institute’s current policy should be checked before registration.
No. Candidates must also complete the required Practical Skills Modules, obtain 4,000 hours of qualifying work experience over at least 36 months, and become a CFA Institute member before using the CFA charterholder designation.
Initially, candidates have to pay a one-time registration fee of USD 350. There are two stages for registration in CFA exams early registration and standard registration. The early registration fees for exam levels 1, 2, and 3 are USD 940, USD 990, and USD 1,090, and for standard registrations for the three levels are USD 1250, USD 1290, and USD 1390 respective for 1,2 and 3rd level of the CFA examination.

CFA Institute states that completing all three levels typically takes three to four years, including the recommended study time of around 300 hours per level. Individual timelines vary by exam schedule and progression.
For exams from February 2026 onward, Level I and II registration is USD 1,140 early or USD 1,490 standard. Level III is USD 1,240 early or USD 1,590 standard. The previous USD 350 one-time enrollment fee has been removed. Taxes, rescheduling and coaching costs are separate.
Level I is generally available four times a year, Level II three times and Level III twice. Available months, registration windows and deadlines can change, so candidates should use CFA Institute’s official dates-and-fees tool.
CFA Institute does not publish a fixed passing percentage in advance. The minimum passing score is determined through its standard-setting process after an exam administration.
Level I uses standalone multiple-choice questions. Level II uses vignette-based item sets with multiple-choice questions. Level III combines item sets with constructed-response questions and includes a selected pathway.
Practical Skills Modules use videos, questions, guided practice and case studies to build applied skills. A candidate must complete at least one module at each level to receive the exam result.
Candidates choose Portfolio Management, Private Wealth or Private Markets. The selected pathway contributes 30–35% of the Level III exam weight.
CFA Institute currently lists Access, Student and Professor Scholarships. Eligibility, application windows and reduced fees vary, so candidates should review the official scholarship page before applying.
