The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) conducted the AI Innovation Summit 2026 from June 26 to 27 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. This two-day summit witnessed an attendance of more than 4,000 delegates, who were experts from the policy making, regulation, technological and CA field and the theme of their discussion was the increasing influence of artificial intelligence in finance and accounting.
The summit was inaugurated by the Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, who pointed out that chartered accountants are the custodians of financial trust in India and ICAI is poised to become a global leader in AI assurance.
ICAI MoU with Sarvam AI
The most notable feature of the summit has been the MoU signed between ICAI and Sarvam AI, one of the leading AI startups of India which is developing indigenous AI models. This will include training on AI and capacity building of CAs, professional development, research, seminars, and developing AI-specific learning materials.
The selection of Sarvam AI, which is an indigenous company that develops AI models customized to the linguistic and regulatory requirements of India, speaks volumes about ICAI’s plan to implement solutions tailored for Indians and not imported.
Launch of AICA Level 3 Certification
In addition to this, the conference also witnessed the launch of AICA Level 3, which is the highest level of ICAI’s AI certification program. The same is only available for those ICAI members who have obtained certification at AICA Level 2. This is intended to enhance their professional competencies related to finance and audit through AI.
ICAI is also working towards making knowledge of AI a part of the CA profession. CA Prasanna Kumar D, who is the President of ICAI, announced that more than 50,000 members of the institute have been trained in artificial intelligence. Moreover, the institute has prepared more than 150 GPT-based tools to help with the professional practice.
Launching of AI Essentials for Chartered Accountants
Finally, ICAI has launched a new publication named “AI Essentials for Chartered Accountants.” It is the seventh book published by the institute that deals with AI.
Implications for the CA Profession
Speaking to the crowd, Shekhawat pointed out that the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India has built a profession that is based on the foundations of financial trust, with the CAs being key to making the country grow. He pointed out that ICAI is taking this global shift and can act as the global leader in creating financial trust by establishing standards of AI auditing and assurance. Since trust is what makes the entire economic model work, the Chartered Accountants are their final custodians. This is because their job does not consist only of endorsing corporate accounting books; they actually defend the investor trust and national economic stability.
Further, he pointed out eight important focus areas for a future driven by AI:
- Ensuring the integrity of data
- Getting rid of the bias of algorithms
- Protecting cyber security
- Managing financial risks associated with deepfakes
- Establishing accountability for actions of machines
- Fostering professional upskilling
- Creating flexible regulation
- Promoting climate finance and ESG standards
From the summit, one can tell that AI is not an option but an important part of audit quality, tax compliance, and financial governance in the future. This view was clearly stated by the ICAI Vice President CA Mangesh Kinare: “The future will belong to those professionals who keep adapting, innovating and creating value.”
While there were genuine problems raised, including the issues about the algorithms bias, data integrity, cybersecurity and deepfake finance risks, it is evident that making sure that the AI tools will stay accountable and ensuring that chartered accountants in all parts of India have access to training will be key to success of the initiative.
This is the clear message to 3.5 lakh chartered accountants of India from New Delhi.
